September 8, 2005

OTTAWA (CIS) - Canadian Interuniversity Sport proudly announced on Thursday the student-athletes honored as Top 8 Academic All-Canadians for the 2004-05 season.

Every year, a growing number of CIS student-athletes are recognized as Academic All-Canadians, having maintained a grade point average (GPA) of 80 percent or better over the academic year while playing on one of their university's varsity teams. In 2004-05, over 2,000 student-athletes reached the prestigious status.

Among these outstanding individuals, one female and one male from each CIS regional association are selected annually as Top 8 Academic All-Canadians.

This year's recipients include Dalhousie University cross country and track & field athlete Hilary Burn of Ottawa; St. Francis Xavier hockey player Tyler Dyck of Calgary; McGill soccer player Danielle Day of Ile-Bizard, Que.; Concordia wrestler Tyler Marghetis of Ottawa; Western Ontario soccer player Allison Oosterhuis of Denfield, Ont.; Toronto swimmer Ian MacLeod of Mississauga, Ont.; Alberta hockey player Danielle Bourgeois of Edmonton; and Manitoba hockey player Paul Deniset of Winnipeg.

Bourgeois is honored for the second consecutive year.

"Over 20 percent of all CIS athletes achieved Academic All-Canadian status this year, an impressive statistic that demonstrates the Canadian commitment to excellence both on the playing field and in the classroom," said CIS chief executive officer, Marg McGregor. "To be selected as a member of the Top 8 is quite an achievement."

Each member of the CIS Top 8 receives a Tissot watch as well as a gift of $500.
